Mixtape Sounds

a collection of mixtapes and podcasts that are worth a look and a listen.

THE HUM OF FADING LIGHTS /// A P|M|W Mixtape

It’s been a strange couple of weeks in my world, and instead of loading up a traditional podcast featuring hot new blog-buzzed jams, I thought that I would share a mixtape that has been keeping me company as of late. It’s a collection of mostly older tracks, all adhering to a particular late-night-drive-type-vibe. Something for the lonely and dark nights spent on dusty highways, or walks through your sleeping neighborhood, or whatever nocturnal adventures you have planned for yourself. Whatever the case, I promise that it will sound a hundred times better at night.

Below you will find links to multiple download sources for the collection (zip file), as well as a longplay mix version (all one track via Soundcloud). Please share/reblog with others if you like what you hear and or support any and all artists that strike your interest. Stream or download as you wish.

RADIO SLOW RIOT /// EPISODE TWELVE (5.7.12)

The music has been coming swift and strong these past few weeks with absolutely stellar tracks landing almost daily. It’s made picking and choosing fairly easy for these podcasts, but sometimes to keep with a vibe, you’ve got to know when to let some things go. For this episode, I had enough material to make a two and half hour podcast, but to keep the flow right and the transitions appropriate, I’ve managed to whittle it down to 90 minutes of almost completely new material with a couple of old gems capping off the episode for good measure. I hope the dreamwave sounds good during your night time listening sessions.

Radio Slow Riot - Episode Eleven

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

RADIO SLOW RIOT // EPISODE ELEVEN (4.20.12)

The delay between these mixtape/podcasts seem to be growing during these busy months, but if anything, it truly allows for a stronger over compilation. This episode is all new music (with a couple of recent re-releases for good measure) and brought with no interruptions (outside of the intro), and a focus on dream pop and lo-fi with the occasional shoegaze and ambient track peppered throughout. You might also notice there are several covers this time around and that’s purely coincidental, as there just happen to be some great covers popping up as of late. I digress. I’ll leave the music in your hands.

BENEATH|SUMMER|STARS :: A P|M|W Mixtape

* This mixtape originally appeared (in a slightly altered form) last June, and in keeping with updating some of the lost mixtapes, it was my favorite to revisit. I’ve slightly altered the original (bulky) tracklist to streamline it and make it friendlier to the lesser known artists, but mostly it’s just become my go-to late night, dream pop mixtape. New DL links below.

It’s easy to soundtrack a party or a gathering or a bar. There’s usually a hundred people in various conversations and no one is really paying attention to soundtracks. It’s the quiet moments that I’m interested in. The preparation to leave. The slow energy before the excitement. The walk home from the bar. The conversation on the lawn beneath summer stars. Those are the moments that I live for and those are the moments that matter. The comedown. The quiet moments. This mix is for those moments this summer. Not sad, lonely music. Not ambient background music, but genuine songs for those moments when you’re with a handful of friends or even just by yourself. For the before and afters.

Think of this as the night time companion piece to the Warm Weather Ghosts mixtape from last month. Take it for a night drive or a walk through quiet streets. Hell, use it for whatever you like. Thanks for listening. Enjoy your warm nights.

WARM WEATHER GHOSTS :: A P|M|W Mixtape

*This mixtape originally appeared on P|M|W last spring and in keeping with the seasonal vibe and my attempt at rebuilding the lost mixtape arc here on the blog, i’ve decided to start by re-upping this collection of warm weather gems (choose your preferred DL site below). Enjoy.

My favorite parts of Spring and Summer are the nights, and on those nights nothing sells summer for me more than some relaxing warm sounds coming though car speakers or headphones on a subway platform or out of a stereo as I have a drink and absorb the late night summer breeze. This is a collection of songs from artists sorta new and not-so-old that strike that organic, lo-fi indie sound that I love to have help me celebrate the warming of the nights. You may be familiar with some or all, but they sound great together, so please enjoy.

Radio Slow Riot - Episode Ten

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

RADIO SLOW RIOT // EPISODE TEN (3.14.12)

These are fewer and further between these days, but I promise you that this episode is worth the wait. In fact, this might be my favorite in a very long time. I keep it just music this week (aside from a short intro) and the 90 minutes run the vibe from upbeat post-punk energy to lo-fi jangles to dreamier electro pop onto ethereal and ambient night music. It’s a well oiled machine this one. The next couple of mixtapes will come faster than recent episodes and in the future there will be some surprises. In fact, if this one gets a good reaction, I might go back to the downloadable zip files with the mp3s separate from the stream. If the reaction is good for this one, I will upload the zip file in a couple of days. If not and no one really cares, then I really need to try harder apparently. At any rate, I hope you enjoy this episode of Radio Slow Riot because it’s loaded with goodies.

Radio Slow Riot - Episode Nine

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

RADIO SLOW RIOT // Episode Nine (2.21.12)

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me and that’s certainly gone and cut into my podcasting time, not to mention the recent issue with Mediafire which caused all back catalog hosting to disappear (remedy coming soon) and it’s affect on free time. However, I managed to squeeze a mixtape/podcast out this week with some of the more exciting releases in the past couple of weeks, as well as a couple of choice older gems. I kept my intros light to maintain a solid vibe and flow and so I won’t drag it out here any further.

Radio Slow Riot - Episode Eight

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

RADIO SLOW RIOT /// a p|m|w podcast /// Episode Eight (01.30.12)

After taking a couple of weeks off from the podcast circuit, Radio Slow Riot is back with a quick catch up episode of all of the latest and greatest tracks currently populating the blogosphere (with a couple of older tracks thrown in for good measure. This week is almost entirely new music, but the surprise might be that it’s about 50% on the upbeat side. We’re not solely in contemplative dream pop territory here, we mine the lo-fi, power pop, synth pop, new wave, shoegaze, and just about everything else in hopes of finding something fun to cram into your ears. Also, this week, there are only a few interruptions from me, as this one is pretty much a 90 mixtape of the tracks that have been getting the most play in my world. Just some great music to help get you through the workday/school day/whatever day.

Radio Slow Riot-Ep.6 (Dreaming Awake Sometimes)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

DREAMING AWAKE SOMETIMES /// A SHOEGAZE PODCAST

For the latest installment of my Radio Slow Riot podcast, hosted by me, I’ve decided to do a year-end-roundup of some of my favorite shoegaze tracks (including new releases and re-issues). After taking a small poll to see what you guys wanted to hear, this was tied with the desert island mixtape, so just as time would have it, I had the shoegaze collection ready to go first. I kept the talking to a minimum so you can just focus on the music. Here you’ll find some classic tracks that were remastered and found their way back into your ears as well as lots of material from albums released this year (many found on Bandcamp) that may not have gotten a proper listen the first time around.
